A guide to using Gütermann Threads

All sewing and craft projects that involve the use of thread should start with a quality product. A cheap thread will let you down in the end, and who wants that after all the effort put in?
Gütermann is a well known and respected brand to sewers and crafters alike. Below, we share some tips from Gütermann, and our customers, on the products we stock*, and their best usage.

Sew-All 100 % Polyester Thread
The most popular thread of the Gütermann range, with the largest colour range. A general purpose thread for most of your sewing needs. Being a 100% long staple spun polyester fibre, it will not generally accept dye colours, so make note of this if you wish to change the colour of your garment at a later stage.
Thread weight 50wt.
*Available in 100m spools, some colours available in 250m spools.
Machine Needle size NM60-90
Machine washable to 95'C
Hot Iron and Dry Cleanable

Topstitch 100% Polyester Thread
An excellent topstitching thread, this is also used for hand working buttonholes, and the best choice for sewing buttons on to an outer garment. This 100% long staple spun polyester thread is the strongest of the Gütermann range. Use the topstitch thread through the needle in your machine, with Sew-All polyester in the bobbin; a topstitch needle will make for a more perfect finish. Available in 30m spools in a range of colours.
Machine Needle size NM100-120
Machine washable to 60"C
Warm Iron and Dry Cleanable.

100% Silk Thread
A rich 100% spun silk thread with a beautiful lustre, great for purists who prefer to keep their silk project intact. Suitable for hand and machine sewing, although will not withstand the high temperatures of polyester or cotton thread. A tip from customers when choosing this thread - for fine silk organzas, choose Sew-All thread instead, as this silk thread has a bit of drag when sewing. *Available in 100m spools in a range of opulent, natural colours.
Thread weight 30wt
Machine Needle size NM80
Machine washable to 40'C
Cool Iron and Dry Cleanable.

100% Natural Cotton Thread
A quality mercerised cotton thread for purists who want to use natural products in their project. The colour range consists of hues of a more natural variety, making it a popular choice. Less springy than polyester, but still produces a smooth stitch. This thread will dye with your garment if you wish to change the colour at a later stage. Thread weight 50wt.
*Available in 100m spools.
Machine Needle size NM60-80
Machine washable to 95'C
Hot Iron and Dry Cleanable

Extra-Upholstery Thread
This 100% polyester thread is nearly as strong as the Topstitch Thread, but is finer in gauge. It is suitable for hand and machine sewing using the thread in both the needle and bobbin. Use when repairing upholstery, canvas, leather and other heavyweight fabrics. This 100% polyester will not rot when exposed to weather, and as such is great as a strong mending thread. Available in 100m spools.
Machine Needle size NM70-100
Machine washable to 60"C
Warm Iron and Dry Cleanable.

100% Linen Thread
This 100% natural Linen Thread is great for purists who prefer a natural product in their projects. It is suitable only for hand-sewing, and as such is popular for book binding, or other craft projects that require a strong natural fibre. (Although in my experience, button jewellery is better suited using 100% polyester Topstitch or Extra-Upholstery threads.)
*Available in 50m spools, in 6 colours. Not for machine sewing.

Machine washable White to 95'C, colours to 30'C
Hot Iron and Dry Cleanable

100% Cotton Quilting Thread
Another quality mercerised cotton thread for purists who want to use natural products in their project. The colour range consists of hues of a more natural variety, making it a popular choice. This thread is lightly waxed for hand-quilting, allowing the thread to easily slide between the layers without drawing out the filling fibre. Tear and abrasion resistant. Not for machine sewing.
Thread weight 40wt.
*Available in 200m spools.
Machine washable to 95'C
Hot Iron and Dry Cleanable

rPET Sew-All Recycled Thread
This new product from Gütermann is for the socially aware who care about conserving natural resources. As with the regular Sew-All thread, it is elastic and flexible, tear and abrasion resistant, non-fade and colourfast, although a little less shiny. Made in Germany from 100% recycled polyester, one PET (polyethylenterephtalate) drink bottle makes 5 spools of 200m thread. So far, available in a smaller range of colours, but watch this space.

 Machine Needle size 80-90
Machine washable to 95'C
Hot Iron and Dry Cleanable

Metallic Thread
Made from 70% Polyamide and 30% Polyester, this metallic effect thread is perfect for ornamental and decorative stitching on your sparkly craft projects. While this thread is suitable for hand-sewing, it has excellent machine sewing capabilities in both needle and bobbin - for best results, use a metallic needle, size NM130.

*Available in a small range of colours, in 50m spools.
Machine washable to 30'C
Cool Iron and Dry Cleanable.

NB Gütermann polyester thread is a long staple spun polyester, and is considered to run smoothly with less lint on your bobbin.
