Did you know that 415A - 419A King Street are from 1905, and are considered a “grand set of shops” built by Josiah Gentle, who was part owner of the brick pits in St Peters [now Sydney Park]? Many many houses, great and small, in the area were also built by Mr Gentle, from his own family residences, to manager and foremen houses and workers cottages.
But, let’s not forget that the Gadigal people were here long before then. We live, work and play on unceded country, and pay our respect to elders past, present and emerging. We have much to learn.

In case any of you missed it, we have a new shopcat in training. Meet Freddie. She was born in Addison Road cat colony and her mama cat put her kittens (5 in total) in a nearby house garden for protection where she took excellent care of them, together with the family who lived there and an Addi Rd Cat Colony observer/fosterer who provided human interaction. When mama cat weaned her kittens, a shout out for adoption brought her to us. She has a shop, a home, and a garden as her domain. She is the 5th shopcat in our 36 year history in King Street. All of our shopcats are/were rescue cats. She follows an esteemed bunch: sisters Rosie & Teddy (1991-2008), Artie (2008-2022), Luda (2024- moved to Melbourne with her owner!). Freddie loves sitting in the shop window, so if the display looks a bit disheveled, you know she’s been there.

Yakisugi 焼杉 (also known as shō sugi ban) is done by charring the surface of the wood, being careful not to burn it completely. Chemical cell changes occur during the process, creating a more water resistant surface through carbonisation. While I can’t vouch for these incredible buttons being completely waterproof, the treatment offers a stunning look to the already striking cedar ply beauties. Circa 1960s/70s. Limited stock. Get them while you can.

Button lovers! When in Tokyo, a “must do” is a trip to Yanaka Red House Button Gallery. I spent a lovely couple of hours with the gracious hosts, inspired to get into the studio and make things. This gallery houses some extraordinary, museum quality antique buttons that will surely delight, and the most exquisite buttons from Japanese artisans practised in the ancient arts of Maki-e and Shibayama Zōgan. Owner Kumi-san has nurtured relationships with craftsmen to produce these outstanding pieces that were soul inspiring - I drank them in with my eyes to capture the essence. You’ll have to make the pilgrimage yourself, as unfortunately no photographs allowed inside, but it’s highly recommended if you are serious about buttons. Satsumas to die for, as well as a broad collection from other countries. Many pieces for sale, but be warned, these are collectible buttons of the highest quality. The gallery is open by appointment only, make your booking well in advance so you’re not disappointed. As well as the treasures inside, the exterior building is an homage to Red House, a significant building of the Arts & Crats movement in Bexleyheath, outside London. The family home of designer William Morris, it was designed by him and architect Philip Webb in 1859. The entire experience is a treat 🐈‍⬛

If you are lucky enough to have one (you are currently one of five over the last 20+ years) it will last a lifetime due to the care taken in the slow process of manufacture.
