Buttons Re-imagined 2025

From a simple fastener to a coveted item beset with rules and

regulations, the button has played an integral part in the social and

industrial history of Western society. Originally a men’s object, buttons

became an obsession for rulers of European empires, created by skilled

craftsmen using precious metals and gemstones. The industrialisation

of manufacturing brought about significant changes, leading to the

eventual perception that buttons were common objects of little

consequence.

Author and jeweller Lucy Godoroja challenges this perception by

bringing together a group of makers to create these intimate objects.

Using a variety of materials synonymous with each maker, the

Newtown Jewellers Collective + Friends reimagines what a

contemporary button could be in all its glory.

Featuring: Lucy Godoroja, with Linda Blair, Christina Gore, Sasha

Matteucci, Kaoru Rogers, Sian Edwards, Moe Matsuyama and Oscar Prieckaerts.
